The APT backend for PackageKit has made a lot of progress recently in the 0.3.x series. It nearly supports all features of PackageKit.
Highlights of the 0.3.x series are:
See the feature matrix for more infromation.
Currently we have got a quite outdated 0.2.4 version in Intrepid. Furthermore sharing the same version would help to reduce maintenance burden, since Fedora plans to ship 0.3.2 in the next release. But before proposing a freeze exception I would like to have some feedback.
So if you are interested in this piece of software and want to push packagekit forward please test it on your system and report bugs that you may encounter.
You can find packages of the upcoming 0.3.2 release for Hardy and Intrepid in this Personal Package Archive. Add the repository and install the packages packagekit and packagekit-gnome.
The new applications will appear in the System->Administration menu.
Update: I uploaded packages to the PPA which fix a problem with PolicyKit. Furthermore I fixed the reference to packagekit-gnome package above.
Update: I just upgraded the packages to 0.3.5 and filled a new freeze exception:

There are new packages in the repository which should fix the PolicyKit issue.
The apt backend of PackageKit will use the configured proxy for apt. You can override it setting the proxy in /etc/PackageKit.conf

Ok, now it seems to function. As I commented earlier, the UI seems really sleek and intuitive ... but this program raises a question at least for me: why do we give to the users administrative powers like these through policykit? What is the purpose of a root account at all, if it can be bypassed so easily.
Sorry if they might seem naive question. but I am no engineer, and I am a bit puzzled by all this.

I gave it a quick try. It seems that packagekit does not work when behind a proxy. Refreshing the list of updates never made any progress at least. I'll try on my home computer later.

@Matteo Gazzoni,
sorry, I couldn't find any package that is from this ppa That I haven't removed already or reinstalled again.
If I am the only one I think there is something wrong with my installation or with the ppa of packagekit.
I mean it even doesn't work in Intrepid!
Thanks for your help, I think I will wait for an update.
I don't want to waste your time.
Regards
Achim

@Achim
You've said that you have downgraded policykit, but the updates were related not only to policykit but to other packages too! Open Synaptic and choose to filter packages by repo, select packagekit ppa repo. Remove packagekit and packagekit-gnome, downgrade ALL the packages installed by packagekit ppa repo and the go with packagekit and packagekit-gnome.
